City History
|
|
In 1850 the Oregon Donation Claim Act is signed into law
and that is when John Fisher and Chevalier Richardson
acquire land in the Damascus area. In 1852 Phillip
Foster builds Foster-Barlow Road and this brings more
emigrants to the area. Edward Pedigo emigrates there and
from clay in the area makes red bean pots and jars. In
1866 Bennett Elliott opens the first store and also that
year Edward Pedigo suggests "Damascus" which means "a
place of new beginnings" as the name for the community.
In 1867 the first post office is established and John
Fisher becimes the first postmaster.
There is record of a post office by the name of Damascus
being established in 1867. It was closed in 1904 and
reopened in 2007 inside a coffee house. Damascus
incorporated in 2004. In 2007 the city council voted
unanimously to place a temporary ban on clear cutting
trees. |
