City History
|
The Kalapuyas Indians
lived in the Newberg area before the settlers. The first
settlers to arrive were hunters and a number began
settling at Champoeg approximately 7 miles southeast of
Newberg. Soon after with an influx of pioneers, they
found the Newberg area to be an attractive place and
began clearing the land for farming. In 1869, Sebastian
Brutscher, the first postmaster, named the town after
his former hometown of Neuberg, Germany. William Hobson
a Quaker minister came from Iowa and settled in the
Chehalem Valley and soon a number of Quakers followed.
Newberg was the first community in Oregon to hold Quaker
services. Soon Pacific Academy was built by the Quakers.
It was later named George Fox University.
Another interesting fact about the area was that Herbert
Hoover moved there at the age of 9 to live with his
uncle after his parents died. The house he lived in was
turned into a museum called the Hoover-Minthorn House
Museum. The town was dry at the time and no alcohol
could be sold within the city limits. |
