City History
|
| William Newby was on
the first wagon train that arrived in Oregon. In 1853,
he built a gristmill that was the main reason the area
was able to grow. Newby came from McMinnville, Tennessee
which is where the name came from. During the early
days, the area was a thriving agricultural area. It had
300 inhabitants. In 1876 McMinnville was incorporated as
a town and then again in 1882 as a city. In 1886 the
county seat was moved to McMinnville from Lafayette.
Many of the building that were built between 1885 and
1912 are still intact on Third Street. |
