Sports

City History

St. Helens was founded by Captain H. M. Knighton, in 1845.  He called it Plymouth.  In 1950 the name was changed to St. Helens because of its view of Mount St. Helens.  St. Helens was initially established as a river port on the Columbia River in the 1840’s and was more popular than Portland until fires of the mail docks.  At that time Portland became the primary port.
