City History
|
| In 1792, Lt. Broughton
and his crew discovered Troutdale while traveling up the
Columbia River. The earliest settlers came in 1850 and
1851 and David F Buxton is listed as the founder. He
developed the first water system which was in use until
1960. In 1872, Captain John Harlow purchased part of
Buxton's land and built his home. The name Troutdale
came to be because he raised trout in ponds on his farm.
He also convinced the railroad to build a depot on his
land so he could ship his produce. Much of the city was
built in 1890 and 1891 after Harlow's death in 1883. |
